DD received a Kindle for Christmas - most basic model, so not HD, Fire, etc.
She also received an amazon gift card which has been loaded on to her Amazon account.

Amazon account is now requesting a credit card. Is it necessary to give that information? Why can't dd simply download what she wants and have money deducted from her Amazon account which is in credit?

TIA.

Yes I think to set up an amazon account you need to add a credit card, but they won't charge anything unless you authorise it.

Once you have set the account up you can take the debit or credit card details off and only add them when you need to.

Hmm, ok.

Perhaps old fashioned, but I'd prefer not to enter my credit card details online if I don't have to. But sounds as if I have to.

Thanks for advice - and happy Christmas.

I'm the same Earlybird!
When I set my DDs' accounts up I made sure my card details were on there for as short a time as possible.
