Can anyone recommend a good, reliable, reasonably priced web-hosting service?

I am looking for a reliable, easy to use (beginner) web-hosting service.

The website is mainly for information sharing. There are no sales etc involved.

Has anyone got any personal recommendations ...or can anyone steer me in the right direction?

Am not trying to market my own hosting, as you may want web page development tools (eg page editor, templates) but Google Sites (free) is worth a look, along with Heart Internet, 1and1.co.uk (1.49 per month for first year, 2.49/month subsequent years, 5 quid setup and full year charged up front with no refunds, and probably VAT on top - been 10 years since I touched them, they might send out a reminder before billing by now, to give you time to cancel, but I'd write a reminder in your diary about 6 weeks before anniversary in case you want to switch) and no doubt others will be mentioned.

'Reasonably priced' can mean anything from around 10 quid for the year to 100+ (if one went with an expensive firm).

The 10 quid end may be on Ebay, but I'm using Xilo.net (they're an ISP as well as offering web hosting... I currently only use their hosting service).

Google Sites overview - you need a Google account to use Sites. Could get yourself a free gmail.com address to get started and then see the overview and move forward... Throwaway GMail address never any harm as a spare for web sites to protect your main mail address from junk mail/spammers...

By reasonably prices I'm talking about £50 per year.

For this I'd like a very easy to use builder which is easy to update information (am currently using WordPress). I do need templates as I'm complete novice but need a professional looking site.

I need about 10 different information pages but have no idea of the size I need for that.

I need the domain name to be either .co.uk or .com ...and email addresses would be good.

It also needs to be accessible on mobile devices.

I have looked at streamline and 1&1 but neither appear to be coming up very favourably in reviews.

I'm beginning to feel a little out of my depth ...

These guys are good . Steer clear of 1&1 though.

A 10 page site would be very small and adequately catered for with the cheapest package.

Your other requirements are related to the site structure itself rather than a hosting package. If you're familiar with Wordpress I would simply use the self hosted version and buy a template (eg from Themeforest). Look for 'responsive' templates if it needs to be mobile compatible.

If you click on the 'hosted apps' icon on the page I've linked to, you'll see you can install WP with one click - so very novice friendly.

my ds used to host - he is 20 with Aspergers syndrome and doing a computer science degree....he opened his own little company but i think he put it on the back burner as he is studying and works part time programming.....

but ive text him to see if he is still hosting. he is cheap as chips but very good.

......Note, though, that it would still take some work and patience to set up a site like this, even if you bought a template. Wordpress templates can be fiddly to set up.

If you're ready for a learning curve, and patient enough to work through some instructions, you will be ok.

I would stick with wordpress. It is very flexible, robust and cheap.

If you don't feel confident customising and setting up the site look for a wordpress designer todo it for you. This gives you professional design but leaves you flexibility so that you don't have to go back to your original designer for every little change, or be tied into a proprietary content management system.

I'm aware this thread is a few years old but I thought i'd add a little input for those wanting "cheap hosting" is not always the best hosting as with many things you pay for what you get.

I would say if you are looking do your research first including how long they've been in business, do they offer support, are you in a contract and are you able to get in touch with them either by phone, e-mail or ticket support should you need them?

If a site looks unprofessional chances are they are a dodgy one, go for one that preferably in the same country should you need them e.g a UK company choose someone like Web Hosting UK or U.S GoDaddy. This also lowers your ping and helps load your website faster.

Your domain also comes with lots of email addresses which can be accessed by web email reader of by a POP3 reader like Thunderbird.
