Can an old iPhone function as a Touch?

I've just won a Blackberry Torch (to my delight) so my iPhone (3GS) is defunct now. Can I use it as a Touch without a sim card in? Are there any pitfalls?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Yes. You will just get a message telling you there's no sim installed each time you power up. You won't be able to use Internet unless using wifi. HTH

Personally I'd sell the BB and stick with the 3GS!

That was my first instinct as well. But ..... much as I love Apple tech, my iPhone, at least, is a pretty poor phone. It freezes during calls, frequently only rings once if at all so I miss a lot of calls.

So I figured that if I could use it as a Touch I'd actually still be getting what I enjoy out of it, if that makes sense.

I hooked my old iPhone (3g) to my stereo. With foobar and some tweaking it now streams music from my computer to my stereo in another room over wifi.

Ooo I'll look into that. Thanks vernier.

Have you updated your firmware on the iPhone?

It's all as updated as I can get without upgrading to Snow Leopard on my MacBook. I'm reluctant to shell out on the upgrade at the moment, particularly as I think it might mess with some work software I need. A shiny new laptop is on my wish list!
