iphone or Android?

So, I am getting a new phone. Currently I have a PAYG basic phone that I really only use to text, make calls and sometimes listen to music.

I want to check email, use the internet, play games. I also know people with fancy phones who do all sorts of interesting other things that I might do if I were able to IYSWIM.

My heart says iphone, but my DH head says HTC Desire.

What do you reckon?

If you want lots of good games go for iphone, I have a htc desireHD, which is very good for web browsing nice big screen, flash player, it's not as slick and speedy as the iphone though. Dp has an iphone and loves it, I do like it, but find the screen a bit small and fiddly for any lengthy browsing.

The screen on the iphone is very lovely though, video and games look brilliant. Hth.

I have an iphone4 and have previously had a iPhone 3 I find it really easy to use and it's so handy, i'm bit of an apple fan though and recently received an iPad which I adore.

I'm asking the same question. How easy are andriod phones to back up and get things on and off. I have an ipod touch and itunes crashes and drives me NUTS. I just wish you could mount it as a normal file system.

Sorry if thats slightly high jacking your thread. My sister loves her iphone 3 and the ipod touches screen, which I believe is the same as an iohone 4 is beautiful.
Certainly I couldn't live with the htc wildfire, its cheap, but angry birds was slow and pixelly.

Android phones just appear as a drive on your computer, so super easy to get things off, plus you can delete things on the phone. Itunes is a big downside for me, all that faff backing up, then your phone goes kaput and you can't simply sync again, cos it will delete everything, It's a true pita.

Angry birds looks nice on my phone and plays fine. I hate it though too hard, like fruit ninja though.

I would say android phone every time - most of the HTC phones are very good.

Android phones are cheaper than the iphone. The software is more open and is way more customisable (eg. widgets). The rate of development with Android software is nothing short of unbelievable.

Hardware-wise you can get an Android phone to suit practically any budget. From the ridiculously cheap Orange SF, the modest HTC Wildfire, the sensible all rounder HTC Desire S to the beast of the Samsung Galaxy S2.

So what phone do you think I have?

Keep an eye on the Vodafone Smart, an Android PAYG that is reputedly going to cost 70 or 80 pounds and due out this month. Not like spending 200 pounds or more (or locking into a 24 month contract at 15/ 20/ 25 pounds).

If someone is unsure whether they really need a smartphone, then the cost of this one is not so high as to be a massive worry, as you could use it for "the basics" or sell it on Ebay if you didn't like it after trying it for a couple of weeks.

I love my Desire. Love love love it.

Though would probably love an iphone if I had one too so you'll probably be happy with eother if you know no ifferent.

Mind you I haven't had to pay for an app yet, even when they are chargeable for an iphone

And as someone said you can plug your desire into your pc and use it like an extra disk drive.

Thanks vforveannetta that settles it for me. I really fancy the HTC Sensation, finances may say desire or similar. This iPod touch is great for games and interfacing with my car stereo, but it's a duff camera and the only way of getting notes and pictures off it seems to by email ( which reformats them). Also I decline to buy another printer to have one with air print, there are 4 in this house already.

I have just got the HTC Sensation, having been an Apple fan for a long time.

I'm in two minds about this phone and it appears what I usually say about Android phones is still true.

Firstly the screen is stunningly big. When I look back at my iphone now, it seems tiny. Websites load in a flash and its definitely quicker than my Iphone 4. HTC Sense 3.0 looks really nice & I love the way I can assign apps to my lock screen then choose which one I go to. Loads of neat little touches like the ability to set a default action. So I text one friend more than call so when I click on her, it goes to the text app.

The camera has loads of features and takes really good shots. The dual LED flash is really bright although I've not tried it on a night out yet.

The gorilla glass is awesome.

BUT and there's some buts with this phone.....

So far (and bear in mind I've only had the phone about 36 hours), I've found the following problems:

1. Wifi reception is poor. In places where my other devices have no problems, the Sensation seems to drop. I believe the SGS2 has the same issue. Annoying it keeps dropping, reconnecting which disrupts what you are doing.
   
   
2. Phone signal keeps dropping and swapping. Changing this to GSM only has helped but this of course disables 3G so is kind of missing the point.
   
   
3. Playing xvid videos on the Sensation is slightly jerky and if I use hardware compression, I lose audio after 1m37secs. Very annoying. I can play using software compression but then the video looks blocky.
   
   
4. Playing videos is nowhere near as clear as my Iphone. I can't decide if this is because of the bigger screen or the iPhone's superior display.
   
   
5. Certain games don't work
   
   
6. Loads of annoying little things like sometimes if I go to uninstall an app, it goes haywire and I have to come out then go back in. Or I can swipe left & right but not choose an app. Or everything stops and the whole phone is "frozen" until I press the Home key.
   
   
7. This hasn't done it today but I had it yesterday and I've read others have same problems. If you take 3 photos with the flash on then the phone turns itself off.
   
   
   Coming from the iphone I also miss the iTunes integration as all my music is on there. I also miss the ability to just connect it to my car and my playlists come through.
   
   So right now I can't decide which one to keep and which to give my OH. If I don't choose soon, I suspect she will choose for me and insert the unwanted one up my backside!
   
   I told my OH it's like having a wife & a mistress. The iphone is the wife. You know what you will get and it's reliable. The Android Sensation is like the mistress. Exciting, unpredictable but you are frightened it will all end in tears! Ideally I want both but apparently I am not allowed!

Indeed it is too late... I have to say I found the Apple advert on TV where it ended with "so you don't have an iPhone" [after showing a few shots of different apps and making a fuss of having e-books etc] a bit sad, and I joyfully shouted, "no, I don't" as I turned the sound back on

Networkguy....I used to be an Apple naysayer too! In fact I remember distinctly saying to my friend when the Iphone first came out that only an idiot would pay so much money for a phone and it's all style over substance!

Now we have an 2xiphone's, ipod touch, ipad and an imac! Oh and HTC Sensation is the latest addition along with a Orange San Fran which hopefully soon will be sold.

Just give in and be assimilated into the Apple collective! It's easier!

If you get an iPhone- make sure it's iPhone 4. The difference is amazing. DH has a Blackberry Torch and is a dedicated Apple naysayer but DD1 and I are addicts. iPhone 4, iPad, iPods in various shapes and sizes- and my beloved MacBook Air. :)

I have an eMac and 2 iMacs, and would happily use an iPod Touch or iPhone (for a Sonos audio system, and CCTV control, etc) but it was just the repeats of the ad which annoyed me, and the content, of course, as if one needs to be, yes, correct word is assimilated and that's something I detest.

It is arguable that Apple does great software, but it's arrogant to assume they're the best and it seeps from their ads which as I say, annoys, so I doubt I will go down their route. Glad they have blocked Windows XP as it means I will only consider the alternatives to iCloud.
