Are you after the corkscrew trunk? You can do that with a lot of plants - it's a way of training them, not something that is natural to the variety.

I can't see what tree it is properly from the picture, but it looks a bit like an olive. You can do the same thing with bay and many other trees that will take a bit of topiary though (laurus nobilis etc).

Thank you, I thought it was olive but was not sure. I am on another thread asking for help for my garden. It is being stripped back completely and will have only trees and Acers. I am not very keen on Olive trees.

It's hard to tell because the photo cuts off just where the leaves start! It could be a small-leaved laurel, which tends to grow rather better in much of northern Britain than olives. It could even be some kind of ornamental citrus, which don't tend to do brilliantly here. You can definitely get the same effect with something that will grow here, should you wish!!

I think it looks more like a bay (although agree that you can't tell because you can't see the leave properly). If it was an olive the leaves would be paler.

But as others have said, there are other trees that you can twist
