Starting a rose garden! Any tips??

Part of our garden I would like to change over to a rose garden. There are already quite a few in that part of the garden anyway, but thought that just roses would be really lovely. That part of the garden is basically square, with beds at the corners, if that makes sense, with a circle of grass in the middle. It has an entrance on the north side, and one on the south side, and is approx 9 metres by 9 metres. Any tips or ideas would be much appreciated Smile

Roses love rich soil so dig in lots of manure before you are planting.
Make sure you don't plant any where roses have been grown before as they can get dieback.
And I always think they look best planted in threes. Do check on height/spread of each one when you are planning as there can be a lot of difference in size.
And if you are buying from David Austin then make the most of their discount codes (that they have sporadically through the year) and bulk orders.
There's a good planting guide on the David Austin website. You've just missed bareroot season so you'll need to buy container roses unless you wait until next autumn. Doesn't make too much difference but I think bare root are a bit cheaper.

I would think about under planting. You will be forever weeding around the roses if you have bare soil. Or use a good mulch. Roses are only interesting for a few months. They spend a lot of time being brown twigs with no leaves. Therefore a bit of ground cover might be required. I have a rose covered arch which adds height to the garden and you can plant a couple of climbers to cover it.
