Compost bin/holder questions.

I want to start composting but am unsure what to use for storage. We can buy the plastic bins gor reasonably cheap from the council or I could have a go at making my own- are there any advantages to either?

I had also read that it's best to have 3 (all at various stages)- is that worth the space it would take?

Finally, are they very smelly? Just thinking where to position it in the garden.

Thank you in advance for advice.

It's worth having at least 2 but if you have space for 3 that's even better.
They don't smell unless the lid is lifted, having said that I wouldn't have it on my patio.
Also, I would buy the council approved bins. I didn't and now I have rats.......

Good point, thank you. Neighbours have chickens so we defo already have a fair number of rats lurking (and at times flaunting themselves quite obviously)!

It depends what you're composting. Garden waste is easier in a bigger open space while kitchen waste should be enclosed. I've had rats in my kitchen compost this winter but have since managed to get rid of he little fvckers
