Dogwood- is it the right time to cut back now?

I have a Dogwood (no idea what type, but it's about 8 years old I reckon) .
I cut it back every year , the height is about 5-6 feet.

But I should hard cut it shouldn't I?

Is now the time? (I don't want to risk the plant, I love the colour in winter)
Thanks

Yes you can do it now, or up till the end of April. Cut it hard back to 6" or so. It will be fine.

I live In London and cut my red ones back yesterday. I don't think you will lose it. If it is very big and still has lots of colour, maybe do half now and the rest a bit later.

I shove the prunings into the ground as they take very easily this time of year.

My midwinter fire, I leave till a bit later because it is planted in a cold shady area of the garden.
