Compost in kitchen

I have 3 compost bins and a wormery.
I love making compost.
It isn't practical to take peelings, tea bags etc directly to any of the above, especially in the winter or poring rain.
Can I ask what you compost makers use in the kitchen? I have had a pretty bin, various plastic containers but nothing that does the job perfectly in a tiny kitchen.
i really want to avoid those teeny tiny flies, though far too cold at the moment.

Oooh, another opportunity for me to bore everyone rigid with my tales of bokashi composting. Grin

Basically, I am super-lazy and this really works for me.

I have just one of the normal, plastic ugly compost caddies right outside the back door. There is no way I am traipsing out in the rain! I empty it once a day into the bokashi bin, which is about 2 metres away (I told you I'm lazy!). It has a lid on it, so it doesn't smell and there are no flies, worms or insects in there. I know some people have them in the kitchen, though I think they do smell when you take the lid off and you wouldn't necessary want a whiff of that indoors.

I put around half a caddy's worth of waste in there each day. You can put just about everything in there, including stuff that's cooked, and meat if you eat it (we are veggie apart from the cat)! The only thing it doesn't like are tea bags. I have no idea why, but just avoid teabags. Anyway, you push all the waste down a bit to exclude air, sprinkle over some special magic bran that comes with the box, then replace the lid. Once full, it sits for three weeks and zombifies the waste. It sort of pickles it. In that time, the box produces a run-off feed, which is much higher in nitrogen than compost - great for veg plants.

After three weeks, you either empty the waste into the compost heap and cover, or dig it straight into soil and plant heavy feeders into it. My courgettes and beans love it.

We have a brown bin which comes with compostable paper liners - you lift the whole bag and drop it in the compost bin when it's full or manky.

My wormery is outside my kitchen door. And I have a small dustbin next to it for bigger stuff [and those with onions peelings and citrus peelings mixed in] which we take to the main compost bin when the weather is finer.

I have a counter top green bin from Aldi, they sell them about twice a year.

It has a filter in the lid to stop smells. We eat tons of veggies, so it fills up quickly, and gets going as it's in the sun.

When full it's a trip to the bottom of the garden to tip it into the compost bin, which has turned into a wormery, as they all seem to do.

I am guilty of leaving stuff outside the back door to fester when weather is bad. Then carting the stinking mess leaving fumes in my wake!
I like the idea of the bokashi, will further my hippy credentials on the allotment!
"They" can't credit our vegetarianism, GF, organic, wormery, no car, lesbian lifestyle, Wink so anything new is icing on the cake!!
