Hi, I have grown Tomatos quite happily for some yrs until l2yrs when I lost my crop to what we thought was blight. I looked up what to do and threw away the pots I had been using , cleaned the wall and last yr didn't grow any. This yr I bought my usual seeds, sungold F1, and all was well until we put them in the grow bags, the plants are very tall, they have very few shoots and leaves, teh top ones are fine , healthy looking, but the ones lower down wilt, go brown and drop off, so the plants look fairly ridiculous. We had some extra plants which I left on a windowsil, these are fine, with fruit growing, and the one in the little greenhouse, while still very small is healthy looking. I did put some fertliser granules in the grow bags, could it be that I have over fertlised them?. Or is it a diease, don't know whether to give up on the plants. Am sad as love to have home pick tomatos and can't believe we shall be another yr without!! All help gratefully received!!

It sounds like Fusarium Wilt or Verticillium Wilt...but more like the first.

It's a type of fungus that lives in soil and it's my bet that it has not left the site.

You should completely avoid that site now...and grow only in other areas in future? Maye you could try hanging tomatoes?

It could be woolly aphid. My parents have had that recently. I'm jealous your tomatoes have set though. Mine are flowering and flowering and noting else in woking as it is so bloody cold.

Thanks Guys, I did find the two 'wilts' while searching and wondered if that was the case, they are planted in growbags, does that mean the wilt was in the growbags then?. Because of the blight we had prevoiusly we went a diff way and instead of growing in the pots we had used before we had bought the growbags and pretty willow surrounds, do I now have to throw these surrounds away or can I somehow disinfect them. I was so lucky in the past as had no problems for many yrs, now losing the faith. Along with this and the darn slugs eating everything else we have planted!!!

Do you have any potatoes in your garden or a garden nearby? It is impossible to grow tomatoes and potatoes in the same area because of blight.

I grow my potatoes at the allotment as all my tomatoes failed last year - I'm now only growing tomatoes at home - I have some flowers so far but no fruits yet.
