Why does my apple tree have no fruit this year ?

We moved into our current house 6 years ago. There are a pair of apple trees in the garden. One eating and one cooking apples. Every year so far they have produced lots of fruit. Too much really. Apart from this year the eating apple tree only has a single apple. The other tree has plenty though. I can't think of anything that has changed. The leaves seem to be dropping as well. Any ideas would be appreciated. I am not a natural gardener!
