How can you find the "good" apprenticeships?

DS2 is on track to get excellent maths/science/computing GCSEs and hopefully a pass in English. He is absolutely determined not to stay on for A levels and given his difficulty in producing quality written work, that may well be the right decision for him, but especially if he can get on a good quality acprenticeship.

But how do you know which they are? Is there an OFSTED type grading system?Some seem to be excellent while others are little more than cheap labour. What do we need to look for?

We found last year that the best apprenticeships were advertised Jan/Feb/March. The ones being advertised in the autumn were all left overs that hadn't been filled... there's one near us that's been advertised since September 17 as it's clear they basically want a cheap cleaner.

In the end, DD got a fabulous apprenticeship out of the blue by doing a week's work experience. They actually created one for her, so if there's something that your DS is particularly interested in, it's worth being pro active.

Talk to the local college - they will have been working with some employers for several years already, and will be able to offer advice.
