Can I make a hotpot out of leftover stew?

Hello all,
I made masses of a beef and ale stew last night, have frozen some but have some left over for tonight. I don't want to have it the same as last night but don't fancy a pastry pie or cottage pie. . Could I put slices of potato on top and call it a hot pot? Should I preboil potatoes as the stew is already cooked?
