Hello!

I have offered to host a family bbq/buffet lunch this coming Sunday. It's a double celebration.

Does anyone have ideas for dishes that won't break the bank, that I can feed about 20 people with?

Hot or cold...savory or sweet...HELP!!

Thanks in advance

Hi, if you have a LIDL near you ours have corn on the cob for 24p each this week. You could cut them in half so would need 10 I reckon - they are fab on the BBQ - really filling as well. HTH

Can you ask ppl to bring something to contribute? Im sure most ppl wouldnt mind bringing a few sausage rolls or a cake especially as its family?. Plus jacket potatoes are easy & cheap & filling!

Can you get any of the other guests to bring anything with them?

You could make big bowls of rice salad and new potato salad, and maybe get some ready to bake baguettes from the supermarkets. Tesco value tortilla chips were highly rated on a thread here a little while ago.

Chicken thighs, drumsticks and wings are quite cheap, you can knock up a marinade with garlic, soy sauce, mustard, honey and tomato ketchup. If you wanted to do something a bit different, mackerel isn't expensive and is great on the bbq - just get the fishmonger to clean and gut and stick some lime, chilli and coriander in the cavity before cooking.

Sausages are a must for a bbq. Corn on the cob is great too, as are baked spuds.

I wouldn't normally bother with anything sweet, but you could get marshmallows to toast on the dying embers once all the savoury stuff has been done, or slit bananas and stick a few choccie buttons in them and stick them on.

Unfortunately, nothing seems really 'cheap' at the moment - it would be great if some of your guests helped out.

Have fun!

oh yes, chicken and sausages are always delicous!

a bean salad? lots of mixed tinned beans with some chives and red chillies sliced in for colour and pep?

Home made potato salad is lush - boiled spuds with mayo and chives?

Chocolate crispy cakes with a smarti on top?

What about homemade ice lollies made with blended fruit and fuit juices? Or yogurt?

Often been to BBQs where you bring your own meat and bread, salad and stuff is provided.
