go with his sleepy signs for a week or so and see how it goes. Give lunch at 12ish and then afternoon nap when he gives sleepy signals, maybe around 2ish?

my kids have never gone to sleep straight after lunch anyway .. DS was around 3.30 (but still had a 7pm bedtime) .. DD is around 2ish (and has a 5.30 - 6pm bedtime .. her choice)

follow the babies signs they'll re-adjust themselves

and at 8 months yes he still probably needs a morning nap, he'll let you know when he doesn't by refusing to sleep (my 11 month old still sleeps in the morning)

HTH
