Yes we stuff down the food as fast as possible so we can get the madrigal books out and start singing around the table.

Oh no - I can't abide it. Eating with my children gives me indigestion... I do sit with them while they eat at 5ish, then when they're all in bed it's dinner and a glass of wine for me and DH.

Agree, lunch and breakfast much more agreeable family meals.

DP sits with his head pressed against the radio in obvious attempt not to engage with us on any level.

DD1 usually has some meltdown when presented with horrible nutricious offering.

DD2 pastes herself/ me/ walls with food-doing BLW don't you know.

joy.

DD just will not pass the port around the table in the correct direction. And last week I caught her using her fruit knife for the fish course. It's just such hard work...

famioly meals are generally good.

Do not comment on eating/drinking habits unless absolutely necessary.

The only thing that drives me nuts is when dd2 slavers and licks all teh chocolate off her kit kat or choc digestive (afters) as if it is a lollipop, leavin gherself with a soggy teetering mess to finally wolf down. That's about the only time my voice gets worryingly loud.

Hate hate hate family dinner atm - fussy kids, DH grumpy because the baby won't eat without screaming between every mouthful, and having to feed a 4 year old, and a stroppy 6 year old and 10 year old who sulk if they don't get their favourite foods (which are mutually exclusive) at every meal.

It is a hidjus nightmare, and I only keep persevering because the one thing worse that all sitting down to dinner is me sitting down on my own with them.

Someone once said you raise your children to be the kind of people you would like to have dinner with. Can't see it happening any time soon in the procrastinating household, but I live for that day ...

They must be pacy. Eat, chat if anyone wants, leave the table when you want. Fewer rules the better.

Before we got the new telly, we used to watch The Simpsons over tea. That was good.

Aw, I quite like our family meals. But then (dd 2.4) is very cute and funny and we don't really do much table etiquette yet (so get to giggle about playing with food and being silly).

I enjoy the family mealtimes.

DH however does not

that is because he is sat next to motormouth DD1 who is far far from quiet.

in fact, I wonder how she has time to eat, the amount she talks!!!

dd1 witters inanely/kicks dd2 under table/strops/cries - but eats food

dd2 tantrums about coming to table/cries about being kicked/complains about food/screams about missing start of Charlie and Lola (tea has to be very carefully timed/leaves half her food

I like our family meals. We have interesting conversations about poo and farts madrigals.
The DC kick each other under the table ask each other about their day and I smile -through-- gritted teeth benignly as they play with their food eat up their vegetables.

why should they be awful?

if they don't eat with you all of the time how will they ever know how to do it.
