Veggie food that's high in protein...

Not soy based or quorn and not much dairy or nuts either. I know lentils will be good, but is there anything else? Also, calcium rich foods. If anyone thinks that it's too much hassle and that I must start smoking again to ease my IBS I'm happy to listen .

chick peas. very high in protein. green veg also high in calcium. Do you eat fish?

Tofu, ½ cup 20 grams protein
Tofu, 1 oz, 2.3 grams
Soy milk, 1 cup - 6 -10 grams
Most beans (black, pinto, lentils, etc) about 7-10 grams protein per half cup of cooked beans
Soy beans, ½ cup cooked ? 14 grams protein
Split peas, ½ cup cooked ? 8 grams
Nuts and Seeds
Peanut butter, 2 Tablespoons - 8 grams protein
Almonds, ¼ cup ? 8 grams
Peanuts, ¼ cup ? 9 grams
Cashews, ¼ cup ? 5 grams
Pecans, ¼ cup ? 2.5 grams
Sunflower seeds, ¼ cup ? 6 grams
Pumpkin seeds, ¼ cup ? 19 grams
Flax seeds ? ¼ cup ? 8 grams

I know you said not much dairy but what about eggs? They are packed pull of protein. And do you eat fish? (don't shout, many of my veggie friends will happily eat fish...)

At the moment I eat fish and red meat once or twice a month. I want to go veggie again and the duck thread and Kerrymum have given me the jolt I needed to try.

Chick peas rock- I didn't know they were high in protein- and I love greens. Potatoes have protein? Cool. So far so good. If you'd like to add chocolate to the list that would really work for me.

calcium high in Sesame seeds, almonds, Brussel sprouts, Salmon, Sardines & Baked beans, dried figs, tofu,brown and white bread (not wholemeal) has calcium added to flour by law.

if you live in a hard water area, water has lots of calciu in it too.

Pumpkin seeds would work. I'd forgotten about eggs . It's amazing how easy it is to fall into a set shopping pattern, and I never think to pick them up to eat- only if I'm making something that needs eggs like pizza dough.

And don't worry about cholestral, eggs is good cholestral (but don't fry them too often )

I hated sprouts - until someone gave me them grated in coleslaw and they are actually really nice in a peppery/cabbagey sort of way.

OOh no frying. Eggs are for poaching with soldiers. Toast ones obviously.

sprouts are brill in tomato sauce and chilli

lentils are tops
big soup fan with lentils veggies throw in some beans (cannelini or borlotti) for more protein

good news on the egg cholestral didnt know that got duck eggs recently lovely soft boiled

Soups are a really good idea- I could add poached chicken etc. to the bowl for carnivores.

AFAIK, if you eat healthily your body can cope with an egg daily. It's if you are also eating lots of trans fats and satuarated fats that you should avoid eggs.
The cholesterol is in the yolk so you could always stick to egg whites if you are worried about high cholesterol.

I am not an expert though, this is just what a nutritionist told me.

that reads wrong, dont mean ketchup ..fresh toms cooked slightly burst with chilli over it
blanch sprouts for a minute then toss em in

just made lovely lentil veg soup just now
added lots of celery leaves coriander its lovely red and yellow split lentils but also add split peas or tin of beans sometimes

puy lentils cooked in stock with carrot celery is lovely too good accompaniment with most fish or veggie sausage if you like em (cauldron are nice)

think all the high protein stuff's been listed. But for calcium, dried apricots are good too, iirc. At least, when I pass them in a shop I always think "oh yes - need some of those for the calcium"

just checked - the vegetarian society has a list of good calcium food.

Excellent. Apricots are yummy. Quinoa is really good for you, and I suppose I could chuck some into a soup (once it's cooked).
