Hope you can help...
DS will be 8 months on the 19th Feb. BAck end of Nov he was happily eating food with lumps and knawing at toast chips etc with no problems, then he became poorly with a cold. SInce then everytime he has food with lumps or finger foods he takes a couple of mouthfuls or sucks/ bites, then vomits. Has anyone else had this.

He loves his food and takes the pureed food nop problem. When we have toast etc he sits and watches opening and closing his mouth and reaches out for the food, we keep trying him but have the same result. What can I do? I have mentioned it to my DR but he is a geriatric old fart and rambles on about non relevant things, I know he is leaving in the next few weeks, so I am waiting for his replacement then I am going to speak to him to try and get a referal to see the paedratician re this (and a few other things!!).

Could it be the etc mucus (sp) etc that DS seems to have since his cold, that is causing this.
Or has anyone any advise.
By this stage DD was happily eating finger foods
Hope this all makes sense.

TIA

Karen

ds didn't have lumpy foods until about 11 months. Don't know why. he didn't vomit, just spat it out.

He's had finger foods since just before then (bread is most succesful) but still won't touch some things that dd loved at his age and that he will eat pureed.

They're funny things, babies.

hi my ds now 12 months is just the same when he has a cold I have to go back to him eating puree only, I think it takes a while for the cold to shift and I get the feeling that if they cant blow there nose then it's sitting at the back of there throats so it makes it harder for them to swallow.

I always get stressed out as well as I worry that he wont go back to eating normal food, but then all of a sudden he's fine again.

could he also be teething??

The DTs did this for a while. So I simply went back to pureed foods and reintroduced lumps. It could be his cold that has caused this. I shouldn't worry, just go back a step for a short while and it should sort itself out. Worked for the DTs, they are back to finger foods. They prefer that to lumps actually and as they are about to be 1 are enjoying "proper" dinners with the rest of us. hth

I SO know what you mean. Dd is over 8 months old and still refusing lumpy food. I try every other day, but she gags and has been known to vomit! I'm trying to be creative and have been adding baby rice or the odd bit of pasta to her normal purees.

She seems to be happier knawing on finger food, although there is sometimes a drama when she swallows bits that are too lumpy! I just hope that eventually she'll progress onto more lumpy food ... I think the most important thing is to stay as calm and positive around dinnertime, so they don't have any negative food associations (much as I'd love to force the Stage 2 lumpy food down her!) It doesn't help when extended family tell you: "Shouldn't she be eating more lumpy food by now? Surely she is not still eating purees?"

Good luck!

Thanks Maikins, luckily I have no family about to start the "shouldn't he be ..... by now"

That sounds horrible I mean luckily just for that reason, I am missing my family terribly at the moment but they all live in the UK, hipefully they will all be visiting when DS gets christened in May!! Off the subject I know !!!

Hi, my 11 month old is still on quite pureed foods too. He started gagging on lumpier food when he had a really bad cold at about 8 months and since then I've been quite reticent with giving him very lumpy foods or finger foods. I feel like he's behind other babies his age. Does anyone know how to get over this problem and have I left it too late for my 12 month old to get the hang of all this?

hiya, my ds1 is 4 now, and was ages getting into finger and lumpier food (like 10-11 months). i worried incessantly, but then he just gradually got used to it, tho it was really a jump from purees to finger food/normal food rather than lumpier purees. he eats like any other normal 4 year old now. they really do do it in their own timee. i am coming to the conclusion that gagging and vomiting/refusing to eat is just their way of saying that they are not ready for it/really not into it at the moment. please don't worry. BUT (!) having said that, ds2 was 8 months on friday and he is utterly bollocks at anything other than formula! my mum keeps telling me to relax and go with the flow but i guess it's cos you their mum that you worry for them......................
