Katsu Curry: Is there an overwhelming flavour of star anise?

I have got a Spicentice Katsu Curry kit but I didn't realise it had star anise! I could smell it as soon as I opened the packet... I haven't used it yet but just wondering, is there an overpowering star anise flavour? I hate star anise but I am willing to give it a go! Halo

Traditional Katsu definitely does not have star anise in it! I hate that flavour and smell and would struggle to eat it. Weird, as star anise is a main ingredient in Chinese five spice, but not in Japanese seven spice, so why would it be in Katsu??

NB Katsu sauce is incredibly easy to make from scratch at home, and you can make gallons and freeze in portions. Google for an easy recipe (its made from carrots and spices)

@terfterf well I made it and hoped for the best! Verdict: It tasted like shit! Horrible smell of star anise and tasted just like carrot soup even though I followed the recipe to a T (it asked for 2 medium carrots which I added) and it was OVERWHELMING with black pepper! Never having that again lol!

I use the Good Food recipe

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/user/1274391/recipe/chicken-katsu-curry

and DH always says "I thought its supposed to have carrots in it?" Because the sauce doesn't taste of carrots, or black pepper! Just a lovely mild spicy thick gravy (I whizz the sauce until totally smooth)

Sorry yours was rubbish, that must have been really disappointing Sad

I have a simple recipe here that shows how to make a really simple but tasty katsu curry, you won’t use kits again!
