What is your ultimate lazy food shortcut?

I have just discovered frozen mashed potato and it's revolutionary!

I was dubious and thought surely it's full of added crap but it's not. It comes out so creamy and fluffy and tastes lush. No more peeling potatoes for me! I bought a bag from Iceland for about 90p. There may be some fancier versions and mash made from actual potatoes may be more cost effective but I don't care!

Roasting onions instead of spending ages caramelising them then freezing them into portions for soups n stuff. I'm lazy AF.

my favourite is jars of lazy garlic.

Frozen mash is the bomb but then I rarely buy it because I cba to peel spuds I leave the skins on boiling them. Its rustic mash not lazy fecker mash Wink

I remember before I had dc and I cooked a lot looking at the already boiled noodles, already cut up veg and pre prepared chinese sauces and saying to dp ' who the hell can't be bothered to chop up a bit of veg and boil some noodles?!?'. Turns out it's me!

Good tip on the mash. Does it come in portioned up blocks?

Diced frozen onions - I hate chopping them with a passion.

Lazy garlic - see above.

Garlic salt. Amazing for making croutons because you don't get chunks of garlic. Smells dubious when fried though...

Microwave rice.... I don't like rice so rarely cook it "properly"

Even better than the lazy garlic in a jar is frozen garlic I get mine from Morrison's and it's 99p for 24 cubes perfectly crushed and easy with no smell. ( it's the taj one from the Asian food selection)

Frozen butternut squash and sweet potatoes are great. Already peeled and chopped into cube sized pieces, great for curries.

Frozen chopped onions

Frozen chopped peppers (great when cooking for 1, no waste)

Watching this! I'm very very lazy but I don't think I have any great shortcuts.

@indubiousbattle it comes in little pellet like shapes so you can choose your amount quite easily. A whole bag of Iceland mash feeds 5 of us and we're big eaters.

Microwave rice all the way. Not the ones in the bags because they're gross but the ones in the tub. I'm not sure why anyone would go to the trouble of boiling rice ever.

I don't use frozen mash but I do use supermarket ready done mash. Pop in the microwave for a few minutes and it's done.

I didn't used to be a lazy cook but I'm disabled now, so anywhere I can cut corners is a bonus! The rice has changed my life.

Frozen chopped onions but I'm really sensitive to onion fumes so they're a health choice really Grin Can't even be in the room with them being chopped or my eyes sting like hell for ages.

Frozen mash! Which is actually just potatoes, butter, milk and seasoning. Forget the time saved, its not lumpy and theres no mess!

Frozen spinach in little blocks - I add it to everything its amazing.

Buying grated grana pardano (we don't like parm) and then keeping it in the freezer and using from frozen - means it lasts so much longer and it defrosts pretty much instantly.

Garlic granules instead of fresh tastes the same imo. A jar lasted ages

Report
NotCitrus · 13/11/2017 19:47

Minced garlic in a jar is way better than granules IMO and cheaper than frozen or in a tube. Usually in the Asian food section. Also minced ginger.
Frozen chopped onions, frozen spinach, peas, okra, mixed veg, all the veg.

For when I want a hot carbohydrate in a hurry, rice noodles or couscous - add boiling water and wait a few minutes.

Frozen jacket potatoes.

Also frozen chopped onions and peppers. I love making fajitas and it’s now almost a ready meal it’s so quick. I’m so lazy.

Frozen garlic, ginger, chillies, parsley, basil, corriander. Hate chopping all that kind of stuff so I'm more inclined to cook properly if I don't have to faff about chopping stuff like this.

Have used frozen mash regularly for last two years...such a time saver and tastes better than mine!. Also, frozen chopped garlic, packs of grated cathedral city cheese which I freeze and use as much as needed in cooking, Following with interest for other suggestions!

Oh and Tilda microwave rice is gorgeous...2 mins and done!

Report
ChickenlessHead · 13/11/2017 20:03

Is grated cathedral city cheese better than normal pre grated cheese? My dm buys pre grated cheese and it always tastes ‘bitty’ and doesn’t melt properly. If it was completely normal cheese, just grated, it would be brilliant.

What's the difference between a frozen jacket potato and a normal potato?

Report
ChickenlessHead · 13/11/2017 21:00

You can put it in the microwave for 5 minutes and it’s like a proper oven baked one professor, with a nice crispy skin.

A relative pours a tin of custard over a pack of Chelsea buns, adds some mixed spice and pops it in the oven to heat through. Then calls it bread and butter pudding.
