It's made from chickpeas. You can make bhajis etc with it. AKA Besan flour...

well, if they fail you've only wasted an egg and half a pint of milk, and if they succeed you'll have gained pancakes...

Oh, I'm sure you can. Give it a go. I make them with wholemeal flour 'cos it makes me feel less guilty.

Yes but they will taste a little odd and may be a tiny bit crumbly. I once made a delicious type of grilled flat bread with gram flour, it worked well so I'd imagine that pancakes would be ok.

Oh, maybe not then. Can you disguise the flavour with shed loads of chocolate or something?

yes you can, I've done it before, they have a special Indian name which I can't remember. I think I did it with just gram flour and water along with spices and green chilli.

Right, won't be trying that one then Mrs B! Well, cheese and ham then? Something like that? Or perhaps use them like fajitas?

You can make chappatti's. They are a type of pancake made with gram flour.

They might be too crumbley to roll like fajitas you could try making them quite small like American pancakes.

they are called besan ka cheela, and I imagine they would taste mrope like thepla. So very nice if you added some methi and chilli, but not really a replacement for wheat flour pancakes!

Ooh blimey - lots of replies!

It is for a savoury recipe... this one in fact. Hmmm they do need to be rollable, so I'd better pop out for some proper plain flour. Thanks all

You def need plain flour for that, besan flour needs spices to balance it, since it is strong tasting on it's own. That looks rather nice, if a little bland.

I thougt chapati flour was chickpea flour. Sorry if I offended you!

Kelly1978 · 02/04/2007 16:32

nah, chapati flour is made from wheat. You didn't offend me - jsut don't invite me for a curry at your place.
