Quick lunch Q - can I eat these out of date foods?!!

I'm on a mission to use up food rather than just chucking it like I usually do Blush .

Got some Sainsburys mini houmous pots, says use by 14/4
Also got some Sainsburys smoked mackerel fillets, says use by 15/4

Neither have been opened yet and have been stored in the fridge.

Am I safe to eat them?!

TIA

If you aren't pregnant or health compromised, open them and if they smell rancid bin otherwise eat. With houmous who knows if the vile stuff is rancid.

Hummus will be fermenting by now, don't bother. Smoked mackerel... does smoking preserve it a bit? Tbh I'm not good with fish even fresh so that would be straight in the bin for me I'm afraid, but I'm sure a bite to test it won't kill you.

I'd have a sniff and plunge in if my nose suggested it was OK.

Thanks all.

Popski yes I wondered if smoking preserved it too.

Think I will bin the houmous, not really sure why I bought it, seemed like a good idea but it's not my favourite anyway.

About to sniff and plunge as per Blue's suggestion...

Update - opened the mackerel, it smelled ok so I had some of it. Have binned the rest though as I'm sure it would start to deteriorate now I've opened it.

Thanks all Smile

I would eat the fish and bin the houmous, I always go by look and smell and never dates, about 60% of food in my place gets eaten when it's 'out of date' never been ill from it Grin
