How can I cook dumplings without putting them in a stew?

Hmmm... wonder if steaming them would work

Or just cook in a bit of stock perhaps.

It depends on what you want them for?

Steaming them gives the a texture like Chinese dumplings and baking them gives a texture like bread.

My dd has seen a stew on a cbbc prog she wants to make - she's says it's 'island stew mummy' it's Irish stew she means! Normally I would just chuck everything in then dumplings at end, but this has got sliced potato on the top so won't work to put dumplings in

Most Irish Stews have potatoes in them, a layer of sliced potatoes is usually a hot pot

^^ agree if it has sliced potatoes on top then it's a hot pot no dumplings in it at all.

Yep I thought it looks more like a hotpot, I thought Irish stew was just a stew - don't really know what makes it Irish? Maybe my dd's name of island stew is better!! Maybe I'll do yorkshire puds with it instead n forget the dumplings!! I like dumplings in a stew though :(
