so just got my first slow cooker and looking for recipes. I can find loads of stew/soup-type recipes online but neither of my kids are crazy about potatoes so would love some pasta/rice/other recipes. have heard you can make lasagne in it, is that true?

my main reason for buying it was to have dinner ready straight after work so the less prep I've to do in the morning the better!

you can make rice pudding - just use normal recipe. i've not done any other rice or pasta recipes as i'm not convinced they would work.

i do bolognese in mine and then put together lasagne and finish in oven. for bolognese i use normal recipe but no water

I do a chicken pilaf with pesto and sundried tomatoes. But it only takes 4 hours. I've also done a green bean risotto, but it took maybe 2 and a half hours. Not sure that I would leave a rice dish cooking all day.

Yes you can do lasagne. Other non stews I do are Thai Green Chicken curry and Chicken breasts with leeks and mozzarella. I going to experiment with doing a paella in mine tonight.

Meatballs are lovely in the SC. fresh meatballs, a jar of sauce (I use Loyd Grossman) & a glass of wine or stock.
Cook on low for 8 hours or so. They're really nice.

Jacket potatoes are lovely sc but as your dc don't like potato that's not much help is it.

My dc love a sausage and bean casserole- I cut the sausages into chunks to avoid comparisons to flaccid peni Wink

On BBC good food there's a pork belly and chorizo stew with beans in it which is divine sc

Lamb kleftico or any tagine- serve with micro rice when you get home ( I know not everyone is happy with microwave foods but I find the rice pouches invaluable for weekdays)

I make this slow cooked pork, although I use a much smaller joint as I don't want to feed 10! I then serve the shredded pork in wraps with carrot strips, sweet corn and cucumber depending on what each child prefers.

I freeze the stock to use in something else.

I've done a whole chicken in mine too. Was delicious. Did mine the right way up but rested it on foil ball props thingys. Made stock in the sc with the carcass too.

Did you just put the chicken in raw? How long did it take?

I did a shoulder of lamb - browned it first and sat it on garlic cloves. IIRC I deglazed the pan with a splash of red wine and might have put some beef stock in (one of those little Knorr stock pots) but no water. It was lush Grin

Hexie - yep just straight in. Cooked it on high for a couple of hours then about 5 hours on low. The meat just falls off the bones [insert delicious smiley]

Thanks for all the ideas. Intrigued by the whole chicken idea, and stock too, brill! Do you think you could throw carrots or other veg in with the chicken or is the bottom just all the fat?

Mabelbee & 574ejones I'd love those recipes. Could try them days in around in the avo.
