Does anyone have a good lentil soup recipe?

I liked the lentil/bacon soup made by Covent Garden, but the wankers have changed the recipe and it's now watery tomato nothingness.

I always use this one and is delicious! I love the spinach and chilli kick

I'd try Googling for lentil and lemon. Or lentil and chorizo.

I do one with brown lentils, those Whitworths dried mushrooms in the orange packet, an onion, some stock and a pinch of dried chilli flakes. Boil the lot up and then whizz or part-whizz. Then eat with balsamic vinegar, swirled into it.

I have a fabulous red lentil recipe. Made with cumin and turmeric and similar. V warming. Let me know if you want it. But in meantime, thanks for reminding me. I will make it soon. Dh and I are trying to cut our food bill and it's as cheap as it is delicious.

I make a lentil and tomato soup, I think it is a cranks recipe?

Anyway fry a chopped up onion, add some chopped toms, then add red lentils, stir, add a pint of tom juice and some stock, and a teaspoon of marmite or vegetarian equivalent. Simmer he fly for 30-40mins, whizz with a blender, serve with crusty bread and grated cheese.

Yummy, lovely on a cold day and liked by all five mad things.

Mine is as follows

3oz red lentils
2 thick slices good quality smoked back bacon, chopped
2 carrots, chopped
1 stalk celery, chopped
1 big onion, chopped
400g can good quality chopped tomatoes
Clove garlic
pinch of sugar
Olive oil
Enough water to refill the empty tomato can twice

- Heat the oil and sweat the chopped bacon and vegetables for about 10 minutes with the lid on
- Add the liquid ingredients and pepper (the bacon is usually enough salt)
- Simmer for about 30 minutes check seasoning and then blend before serving.

Here it is:

30ml each oil and butter
2medium onions, chopped
3cloves garlic, crushed
2 sticks cinnamon
5ml ground cumin
10ml each ground coriander and turmeric
500ml red lentils, rinsed and drained
2 litres chicken stock
A little sea salt and sugar
30ml tomato paste
1 medium potato, pealed and coarsely grated
Thick plain yoghurt, garam masala and fresh coriander leaves to garnish

Heat the oil and butter in a large saucepan. Add the onions and garlic and when softening, add the spices. Allow them to sizzle for a minute or two, adding a dash of water if necessary to prevent scorching.

Add the remaining ingredients, except the garnish, bring to the boil, then cover and simmer gently, stirring occasionally, for about 25 minutes or until lentils and potato are soft and the. Gradients have cooked almost to a purée.

Stir vigorously to combine, and if too thick, add a little stock. Check seasoning, remove and discard the cinnamon and spoon the soup into warm bowls. Top each serving with a dollop of yoghurt, sprinkle with garam masala, and surround with a few coriander leaves.

The recipe also suggests serving in white bowls for prettiness factor! grin

I usually skip the garam masala and coriander at end but the yoghurt is essential.

I don't go to anywhere near that much trouble!
fry up 2 chopped onions. meanwhile boil up lentils with chopped carrots, drain when soft (about 45 mins) and add to opnions in pan with gammon stock. Cook for another 20 mins. Whizz, add in a slice of gammon or cooked bacon finely chopped.

Jamies store cupboard one is good. Has bacon in it but I dont bother with it. It's the standard way to use up leftover carrots, celery and onion. Am making it tonight

Delia has a really nice one in her complete cookery course. Lentil & bacon soup, uses the dark green/brown speckled type lentils and is an unblended soup with lots of other standard soup veggies and shredded cabbage in. Can post recipe if you'd like it. Also freezes well.

It is nice with curry in and chopped hardboiled eggs- cheap and cheerful supper.
