If I've run out of golden syrup I substitute honey or maple syrup. You could even do treacley ones at a push!

Keep a bottle of "Grenadine Syrup" on hand. It's great in Mixed Drinks and very
lovely on Crepes and pancakes and french toast.

Apple juice. Check out my friends blog Housewife Confidential. She has some ace recipes on there.

for a refined sugar free recipe, try agave syrup, date syrup and chop up dried fruit nice and small so they spread their sweetness around...

I use honey, easier cos you normally have it in the house whereas I wouldn't use golden syrup for much else

Nailak if you use dates how does that work, cos they are not runny like honey/golden syrup?? we have loads left over from ramadan still (like every yr!!) so would be quite useful to use them up in something

Thank you, didn't think of honey!
Am looking for calorie dense snacks for my children to have in packed lunches as they don't eat much but need lots of energy...

Try adding chopped (stoned) dates to the mix. Very yummy!

Google diabetic flapjacks. They use pureed dates with apple juice instead of syrup and it works brilliantly.

Date syrup works too.
Can get malted rice syrup too.
