Food Mixers

I'm on the lookout for a good quality food mixer but can't afford Kitchenaid prices.
The last mixer I had turned out to have plastic gears and after using it four times, the bowl would no longer turn.
Can anyone recommend a mixer that will last me for lots of cakes but not cost a fortune?
TIA

I use a Kenwood Chef (the classic white one?) which is about £150 - just looked on Amazon and they've got them for £140. I've had it about 6 years and it still works perfectly.

Love my Kenwood Chef too. I think they do a sort of mini version now which is cheaper than the Classic chef.
