I have read the book 'empty cradles' - about post war child 'migration' to various Commonwealth countries. This film is about the woman who investigated this issue - has anyone watched it yet?

I thought about going but it is a bit too harrowing for me I'm afraid

Oh that looks like one to watch. I read 'Empty Cradles' many years back (still have the book). Wonder if the organisations involved in the UK ever did release their records, so those migrants still alive could trace their families.

More info about the child migration:

Yes I watched it a few weeks ago. It wasn't showing where i live so I watched it in London when i was there visiting. That's how much i wanted to watch it! I havent read the book Empty cradles but i have read a similar book written by one of the Fairborn children (who was accused of making the whole thing up and exaggerating the ill-treatment etc).

The film was brilliant, the lead actress Emily Watson played her part so well. It was a sad film as expected but definitely worth watching!

I went to watch this with DH today. We both wept. Wonderful acting, with neither of the Aussie "names" stealing scenes.

For us it was particularly affecting as, being here in Australia, we're ony too aware of the frankly pernicious influence of organised religion, and its still-powerful hold on so many aspects of political life here. Angry :(

I don't know why I said political, though the god-bothering vote is potent here, but so many aspects of social life. A good instance would be recycling to op shops. Almost all are religiously-based, and it sticks in my craw to give them my stuff; though I've just tracked down Vision Australia and an RSPCA shop so will give them my cast-offs.
