Copper Coil - honest views

I've been on cerazette for about 2.5yrs. One normal period then not stitch of spotting or bleeding since. Prior to that I was on the depo for around six years and a brief spell on the regular pill that sent my blood pressure squiffy.

I've always thought I'm fine on cerazette but.... I put about 2st on whilst on depo and despite concerted attempts to shift it in the last 12 months I've lost nothing and I'm wondering if the pill is hampering weight loss. My sex drive has also plummeted in the last year, DP has had health problems that affected things but I'm finding myself completely unbothered (purely about sex, everything else is fine) now he's back fighting fit.

So I've been researching contraception options and come to the copper coil as the only real non hormonal option. I've been on hormonal contraception for almost ten years and feel I need a break. But I've enjoyed having no periods and pre contraception they were always light, regular and problem free so I'm a bit scared of some of the stories I've read.

Tell me the good, the bad and the ugly and help me make up my mind ??

TTC may be on the cards in a couple of years so not up for permanent solutions.

I have loved mine. I think they are brilliant!

I had to have a larger one removed and replaced with a smaller sized one initially (years ago) but since then they have caused no problems at all. My periods were not really affected and the freedom of not having to think about contraception is amazing Smile

Uncomfortable fitting but once it was in it was fine. Much heavier but shorter periods. I preferred the Mirena coil as my periods pretty much stopped, but that is still hormonal.

My periods are heavier and more painful, but the last few months they seem to have settled down again a little. It's taken about 18-24 months for it to get to that point.

Fitting was very unpleasant. Have no children so that quite possibly explains why.

Initially 7-8 days of flow, 2-3 very heavy. Cycles regular (bar 2). The best thing is the reduced mood swings as I ended up really struggling on cerazette.

For me it's been worth it.

Best thing ever! My 5-year one was great - possibly coincidence but I got a regular menstrual cycle for the first time ever with it, way less pain, and escaped the terrible psych effects from Cerazette.

So recently got a 10-year one installed which can stay for the rest of my life, and the checkup last week confirmed I should never have to think about contraception again!

Hardly felt it go in - the nurse and her trainee were a right laugh!

I think if you have light flow then it will be fine. My normal periods were medium to heavy and the copper coil caused me to flood. It was awful so had it removed after a year

I’m normally light flow. I absolutely LOVE mine. Insertion was horrible (as in could barely work, horrible even on full analgesia and more..) but, TOTALLY worth it.

Periods sometimes last slightly longer (more pre-period spotting so 7 days as opposed to 5) but they aren’t actually any heavier.

Love mine. Periods are heavier. Might be a shock if not used to them though.

I like mine, insertion was unpleasant - but I took pain relief before and after as advised - basically really bad cramps during insertion, then moderate to bad period like pain for a couple of days. I went straight back to work the same day without any issues. I've been lucky with my cycles - they have got heavier but only 5 day cycles once a month, I know someone who bled for 10 out of every 14 days for the first couple of months although that has improved for her since.

The only real problem I've had is that DH can feel the wires sometimes and it puts him off!

Had two children but still the fitting was horrendous! Cramps and after pain we're unbearable. Have changed my periods from light 2/3 days to flooding endlessly for over a week. I now get regular period pains where I never had them before. I wouldn't get another.

Did you have one inserted in the end? Just interested as I'm looking to have mine out and had it in in January.
