Is it easy to ask for this to be done because I've heard that doctors try to fob you off with a merina coil which I can't have because I come out in an itchy rash if I take progesterone and people are reporting too many side effects with the merina.

The FP doctor told me that female sterilisation can lead to heavy periods Hmm Not sure I believe her. She insisted that dh should have a vasectomy, but that just isn't going to happen Sad

I can't have the copper coil again as my periods ended up too heavy. Anything hormonal is right out and condoms are just a bloody nuisance. I'm 41 and have two dcs.

Anybody with any advice or insight?

Had it done 4 years ago. Doc tried to convince me (now ex) DH should have himself sterilised. I just asked my GP who referred me and I waited 7 months. I was sore and bloated the next day but recovered very quickly. No after affects at all, normal periods and normal cycle. I'm now 43.

Thanks for your reply.

The FP doctor was insisting that dh should have a vasectomy, but he just won't Hmm I'm sick of worrying about an unwanted pregnancy.

I was more worried about the effects of long term hormonal contraception, but also certain that I did not want another child. Just ask your GP to refer you to the local hospital and the wheels will be put in motion. If you're in a rush, I think it's around £800 through Marie Stopes clinics. You're supposed to have a general but I had an epidural because I had to go back to work the next day! That's not recommended, but I wasn't getting sick pay.
