Hello,

My daughter is fairly new to tournaments and I'm trying to get my head around how to read the scores and grades!

What does TB = Total of progressive scores mean?

But I am sorry - not sure about the scores question - I have asked DS1 but he says it's "complicated"

DS1 just made Supremo for the first time at a tournament on Saturday so I am for him - this is the fourth time he has been in this particular tournament, and to qualify for the next round and to get Supremo as well has made it all worthwhile.

Wow that's brilliant! Is that to qualify for the gigafinals in Reading? We will be going to that one!

The whole scoring thing is quite complicated. I've just signed my daughter up for the ECF grading.. That's even more confusing!

We was at a tournament on Saturday, possibly the same one?

I think the TB is if there is a tiebreak situation. But unsure how the score is calculated.. Oh I don't know! ;)

Massive well done to your son. We have only been to a handful of tournaments and I am so supprised at how big they are and how mank kids are into chess! My daughter is really enjoying it and we have a few lined up.

It was in Saddleworth near Oldham, and he is through to the regional Giga Finals on Manchester now.

I thinks a lot of schools are catching on to how good chess is for kids - we have a chess teacher come into school every week now.

DS plays at a club in Ashton Under Lyne every week, and they play in a chess league, though because there are not a lot of chess clubs with kids he ends up playing adults in the league, which has been interesting to say the least!

Not the same tournament, your miles away!

We have recently got a chess teacher at the school too but we have been playing at home for ages really.. I honestly had no idea how big chess was or how many kids are involved competitively!

I also think its amazing how they can concentrate for so long, my daughter is in the under 7s. The tournament was 9.45-5pm what a long day- and for the mums!

Sounds like it is part of the Delancey Chess in Schools competition though? I think they held finals all over the country that weekend.

What does TB = Total of progressive scores mean?

Progressive scores means the total score at the end of each round.

So if one player lost the first game, and won the next two, his progressive score would be 0, 1, 2, and his total (or sum) would be 3.

If another player won his first game, lost the second, and won the third, his progressive score would be 1, 1, 2, and his total (or sum) would be 4.

Not the best tiebreak system, but easy to calculate, and often used in kids' events, where many players do not have a chess rating.

With the ecf grading some kids have say 24d and some have a star next to the number. What does the d stand for?
