I'm fucking embarrassed to be English right now!

Fucking Boris Johnson the buffoon is Foreign Minister. Just watching international reactions about his appointment right now and some of the appalling things he's said about Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Just no. How can we be taken seriously on the world stage with this bumbling fool representing us?

BoJo just doesn't go away. But I strongly suspect and/or really hope that May appointed him as a "you fuckwit got us into this? Now deal with it!" thing. Otherwise it makes no sense whatsoever to me.

Hmmm good analysis there! Would be a good punishment. However from his time as London Mayor, the concensus was that he wasn't good at fine details and was quite lazy.

Not sure if he's too 'diplomatic' either...

And he has such a huge ego that he thinks it is a good idea!

Can't comment as I'm not English.
Unfortunately he is my foreign minister too though.

I am just so hoping that the objective is for him to be sacked as soon as he fucks up. Same for the Brexit cabinet posts. They won't be able to achieve the impossible so the whole Brexit nightmare will be deferred until the next GE and then we can vote properly on it with manifestos and the like.
It is highly embarrassing!

He's no different than any other politician, they're all self serving egotists with god complexes.

They all seem to think the country begins and ends in London too.

Exactly my thought. It's such a measured BREXIT cabinet that May will basically throw them out without a seconds thought.

No I think she just has bad judgement. Appointing a proven liar as foreign secretary? He won't have the respect of the people he's negotiating with.

She's kept Andrea Liar Leadsom on as well, who if she has proved anything, it's that she's not even fit to be an MP.

Well, my friends and family abroad (EU, US, Asia and Australia) all seem to think we are way too keen ripping the Reality TV crown away from the Kardashians.

The thing is... it does feel like reality TV!!! Some kind of political Truman Show or something.

You can't claim Boris entirely for England. There is loads of other nationalities in him. He has fairly recent French, Swiss, German, Turkish and Russian Jewish forebears. Admittedly, there is a bit of English in there too.

How he acts can only reflect on himself. Think of his new appointment as a soap opera (or farce). You don't know what the next instalment will bring.

I dont think disliking Boris (and yes, he is a comedic plonker) should make you embarrassed to be English. No more than I would expect an italian to be embarrassed of their nationality due to Berlosconi. Its unfair and a tad overreactive to attribute the actions/behaviour of one person to the way you feel about your connection to an entire nation of amazing diverse and wonderful people.

Let me be clear, you are entitled to feel a certain way, I just think its a little OTT to be honest. Think about why TM picked him for that role specifically, she is no fool, I am sure she has a logical reason. Time will tell.

I read an article yesterday which said the job he has got is smaller than normal as the EU parts of it have moved to the Minister for Brexit. Boris is well known, outside the EU, from being mayor at the time of the Olympics and is expected to act as an enthusiastic salesman for the new, exciting, post-Brexit Britain. That was the theory anyway...

I have relatives born in Switzerland and living in Germany and Italy.

We are a laughing stock in all those countries to now.

Everything about UK politics at the moment is an embarrassment. My df was commenting on the elections in Australia saying basically it's all fucked there, to which l pointed out what truly fucked up looked like (here). He agreed and asked when we were we moving home (Australia) HmmGrin

I am amazed at this appointment, though. I thought he'd be back in around 4 years. Next general election.

I am now convinced he is teflon. Nothing sticks. Or maybe there just aren't any standards anymore.

Lets face it. It is now okay to be seen to have lied. After Penny Mordaunt saying there was no veto on tv three times, without even apologising afterwards, I am not surprised at anything. Andrew Marr kept coming back to it to give her a chance to tell the truth.

It seems there is no behaviour too unacceptable for a politician to ever resign over again.

Even Fox is back.

Yeah I am sure she has a reason. The reason is she can always shrug shoulders and say: see I was Remain always so you have got to go grab BoJo's neck because it's him and all the Brexiteers who were in the relevant posts and what else could I do?
I think she is clever for thinking that.

I think it's a gamble putting Boris in the foreign office, but he will have to get serious and start doing some hard graft so TM might just be on to something. Basically she is giving the brexiters the Brexit jobs and saying you promised it, now you can deliver it. They will either faint at the size of the task or they will make a decent fist of it. We will find out.

Report
GloriaGaynor · 14/07/2016 21:31

However hard he grafts he's a known liar on the world stage. French foreign minister called him 'a liar with his back against the wall'. Quite apart from being a chaotic buffoon. Who will take him seriously?

He's all bluff and bluster. That might work in a campaign when many of his supporters are too naive, poorly informed or poorly educated to see through him, but you can't get away with talking crap in negotiations of this gravity.

There was a tongue in cheek comment on the world at one that TM has made appointments to "educate" her cabinet, hence brexit people in outward looking roles, priti Patel in a dept she wanted to shut down, leadsom who didn't believe in climate change in environment etc. Also agree there's an element of "you broke it, now fix it". Interesting times. I really hope TM knows what she's doing because we need a clear workable plan somewhere.

For Foreign Secretary I'd want someone whose word is his bond, not someone who treats his word like something disposable he keeps in his wallet in case he gets lucky on a Friday night.
