How many NI'ers will now apply for a Irish passport given the result today?

I will.

I'm Scotland so not sure whether I can or not.

Feeling pretty devastated and confused.

I see an independence referendum in NI's future.

Look at the divide down Northern Ireland, it is very interesting. Much of it correlates with funding from the EU interestingly.

As for independence for NI...holy Scotland couldn't get the finances to stack up. Northern Ireland has no chance, we receive massive handouts for the government and a huge reliance on public sector jobs.

Apart from that....for independence, stormont would have to make a decision...crikey that would overwork the folks on the hill something shocking.

I've got my forms in the drawer. Off to the London embassy for me next week.

I am very worried about my parents. They live practically on the border. If things really kick off then they are back in the firing line. Literally.

And the EU peace money. That's all coming to an end. Used to be the joke that the roads in the south were shit. Let's see how much money out illustrious government spend on NI outside the EU...

You can get an Irish passport if you were born on the island of Ireland, eitger of yiur parents were, and probabky if any of your grandparents were.

The Irish passport office is completely overwhelmed with applications already.

And yiur entitlement is extremely unlikely to change.

freebutton very few need to go to the London embassy and can just be posted back. Mine was a few years ago, really easy process.

DoinItFine · 24/06/2016 06:23

Your passport is still going to work as an EU passport, probably for a couple of years.

There is no rush to get an Irish passport.

FreeButtonBee · 24/06/2016 06:25

Yes. But my British passport really doesn't represent me any more. So fuck it. I'm going to cut off my nose to spite my face and refuse to use it any more.

I'm surprised the vote was so close in NI given that the EU gives a huge amount financially and if Britain goes into recession due to the vote, which is likely, then these grants will be needed more than ever.

Also, what will now happen with the border between north and south? It's such a mess

Well that's fine.

But there is no need to rush to make a meaningless statement of nationality with a travel document. Grin

You can just apply and wait until it arrives.

Some people are genuinely panicking that their travel within the EU will be restricted immediately. :(

Report
Trooperslane · 24/06/2016 06:34

This is nothing to do with travel restriction for me.

It's a statement of disgust and regret.

I can not get my head around the DUP's position.

Brexit is a disaster for NI in every possible way.

The Shinners are delighted.

The turnout in NI seemed very low considering they have more riding on it than anyone.

This is the worst possible outcome for NISad
The repositioning of any sort of visible boarder will ignite bad feelings on both sides again.
My children 8 &7 knew little about NIs history. They have never experienced them and us. That will change.

An Irish grandparent will do for a passport. Maggie Thatcher's father was eligible for one. I doubt he had one, but he was eligible.

Report
LizKeen · 24/06/2016 07:37

Yep. I will be getting Irish Passports for us all.

I am really worried that calls for a referendum on a united Ireland will trigger a return to violence. I don't want to bring my kids up in that.

Never thought I would say it but I am considering getting the fuck out. Where to I don't know.

Report
JasperDamerel · 24/06/2016 07:43

I was going to start a thread to discuss what happens next. I live in England now, but will be going back to Irish passports for me and the kids from now on, and hoping that NI doesn't implode.

DoinItFine · 24/06/2016 07:46

A grandparent born in Ireland gives you the right to apply for an Irish passport.

It could be denied. It's not an automatic right to a passport.

They pretty much never are as things stand. But that could chage.

We were 'joking' yesterday that UK better not vote leave as they will have to build a wall and have international immigration boundary built.....

thisoldhouse1239 · 24/06/2016 09:30
