Offering to the homeless

This morning it was 4 degrees & the local homeless man was about. I bought him
A sandwhich & a cup of tea as nothing more than I thought he may be hungry. He threw it in the road & swore at me. Has anyone else experienced this?

Oh dear - that's a shame.

I suppose it would have been (even) more thoughtful to have asked him if there was something you could get him.

I asked a man sitting on a blanket if I could get him a hot drink one evening and he started to say yes then changed his mind saying I'd have to go too far to get a hot drink. Despite telling him I had plenty of time (I was killing time between dropping DC off and going to something) he asked for an energy drink and a bar of chocolate. He explained it would keep him going if he didn't manage to get enough money to get into the hostel before it closed at 11. Presumably that was a cue to give him money. He thanked me very politely for the can and bars of chocolate though.
