Considering it at mo - will surf the colleges - any tips on the best/worst/ most sought after by employers?

I think you need an NVQ in care, most colleges do it.

my dd is about to start her NVQ 3 in beauty in September. The college that she has applied to do a 'fast track' they do the 3 year course in 2 years if you have 5 GCSE's including science.

Forgot to say that it's a 3 day a week course but you have to find a placement somewhere for one other day per week

Are the on line courses any good? I don't rally understand how you could get any practical experience doing a home based course!

I didn't know that you could do it on line - I would have thought it was very much a 'hands on' thing

Thats what I thought - but when you google for the courses there's loads of online options too.
