We have some workers at work who have to do out of hours work.

They get paid a separate on-call allowance when they are on call. If they do scheduled work at night, they get paid overtime.

However, if they have scheduled work at night, they are also not doing a full day's work.

So let's say they have scheduled work at 11pm. What they will do is come to work at lunch time (as they will have lie-ins claiming they have late work to do that night and need the rest), go out for supper (which they will claim as they are working after 9pm), do the work at 11pm (usually an hour of work, maybe an hour of monitoring) then not come into work till lunch time the next day. THey will also claim a taxi home after the work.

This is starting to raise some eyebrows at work. What is annoying people is that they are getting paid for 2 normal work days (which they don't work fully), then in addition, getting paid overtime for the hours they work at night.

What would be your comments on this? Should they be made to work a full day beforehand?

No, that wouldn't be fair, unless you intended to change it to something like the 4 day on, 4 day off type of Rota.

& if the existing pattern, & perks is already written in contract, then you will have trouble changing it anyway

That said, I can see why it would annoy other staff, but I bet if you offered them the same work pattern they would most likely find an excuse to turn it down..... its just the nature of employees to find something to moan about I'm afraid, it makes them part of the social crowd (speaking from experience as an ex Director)

claiming supper as its after 9 sounds a bit over generous though, unless in contract of course, so if you are looking to cost cut, that might be worth looking into?

My Husband used to work an unsociable shift pattern for a large company, they didn't get paid overtime, as it wasn't really overtime, just the standard wage, but with an unsociable hours bonus on top.........the taxi was also included, but arranged by the firm, who had a contract with a cab company, but it was a 3 am shift, so there was no alternative way home.

but like I say, if its contracted, not much you can do about it.

Are you a disgruntled colleague or the business owner/manager?
