Company car advice (just posted in Chat too)

I am due to get a new company car. Have always had a pool car until now but the lease us up and the company has no pool cars left. Good news and exciting to be picking my own car.

Only slight problem is I haven't been told to what value of car I can pick which makes choosing one difficult. The company won't tell me - I just need to suggest a car and they will say yes or no which makes starting the search difficult!

My question is (I know it won't be very accurate as every company is different) but does anyone have any idea about company car prices for someone who is about the same level of their career as me? I've been working for seven years now since graduating and salary is mid £20ks.

Strange question I know but just need some kind of starting point!

No idea on actual car prices I'm afraid, as I've had a company car / lease car through work for the last 9 years, but in my organisation (High Street recruitment agency), somebody on that salary level would get a VW Golf Blue Motion. I guess you could Google the price of that to give you something to go on.........

DH has a company car. He graduated 10 years ago, earns in the low 30s and has Skoda Octavia Estate. He has to have an estate for the type of work he does, and you get a lot of car for your money with Skoda. And low emmissions on the diesel.

Bear in mind that you will be taxed on the list price of your car and emmissions.

His first company car was a Citroen Xsara. It was cheap, but horrid.

They are just hoping you will suggest one a lot cheaper than you are allowed then they can say "oh yes of course!"

Suggest a Bentley, then gradually work down or you may lose out!

Thanks everyone.

I'm driving a Merc C class at the moment but as they basically use up any pool cars before letting people get their own company car, it doesn't really tell me much as it could have belonged to anyone.

Will look up the VW and the Skodas.

I think I was maybe looking a bit too high. I liked the idea of a Toyota Prius as it does 70MPG and is only £42/month tax. The Merc I have been stuck in was over £100/month tax! Really couldn't afford it but didn't have much choice!

Next one with most MPG was the BMW X1 but I think still probably too high in price.

This is really difficult. Maybe I should just ask for a Ferrari and go down from there!

Apparently the Golf is one of the best deals on the tax front, as it's so eco friendly.

Have just looked at Golf and apparently it is £90 tax. Cheaper than I have now but not the best. Although may be compared to similar cars.
