Asking for a friend. He’s been asked to attend a mediation meeting without being aware of the details of the complaint. Is this right?

There are no "rules". So if this is the way that the employer does things, then that is a matter for them to decide. He does not, of course, have to attend if he is unhappy about it, but that could very obviously lead to a more formal response from the employer, which he would probably like a lot less. So I'd suggest sucking it up and going in with a positive attitude - whether he, the other person, or both are in the wrong/right (to their minds), mediation is preferable to disciplinary proceedings.
