Work

is this ok - or not?

Someone I work with has been off sick since March.
It's all medically certified
I happen to know that she went away on holiday for two weeks abroad during this time and is now planning a second trip
To me this seems not quite right - she has already said that she expects all her leave accrued during this period to be given to her on return to work
I like this person and she is good at her job but I just have a v bad feeling about it all and wondered whether I am being unreasonable or whether she is taking the Micky
The sickness is not a cancer or anything like that I'd rather not say what us is in case this is too identifying
Just wondered what any HR people might think?

She's right in that she does continue to accrue holidays while sick as she is still employer.

I think I it's fine to go on holiday, out etc if signed off. It can aid recovery in many cases depending on the illness.

If the sickness if MH related she will be encouraged to holiday. I'm not sure why you feel the need to question her absence on Mumsnet. Why not ask your own HR dept and see how quickly you get told to butt out of someone else's business.

Would get told very quickly if they asked me!

Why would it not be ok? It's perfectly possible to be fit enough to go on holiday but not fit enough to work.

She's sick not dead
She's perfectly entitled to go on holiday

Yes sometimes a holiday is the best thing and yes she will accrue leave for use on return.

Go and ask your HR, they will tell you to butt out of someone else's business as it's absolutely nothing to do with you.

Just because you're signed off doesn't mean you can't go and do things. A holiday may be something which helps her issues.

It's not your job to police what's going on with her whilst she is signed off

I'm sorry if I sounded like I was trying to be a sickness controller!
I didn't want to approach my own HR as they are extremely hot on any sickness and I didn't want to cause any difficulties for her. I looked in the sickness policy but there wasn't any thing about holidays.
From all your replies I'll do as you suggest and keep my nose out!!
Thanks for your snswers

you can be well enough to go on holiday but not well enough to go to work. Just because you are too ill to work doesn't mean you should be laid up in bed all day long. There are many many illnesses where I work (physical environment) that would mean a period of time off, but would not stop someone going on holiday.

Generally it is OK but depends on why you are off. I manage someone who had been off since March and been on holiday. Which is fine but plastering it over Facebook is causing resentment with colleagues who have to pick up the slack.

If you are signed off with an injury, say a leg injury but go on a walking holiday that would be different.
