Which would be the best move (or not) for career?

Hypothetical situation at the moment but have heard there will be some movement at work which is rare!

Ok NHS AHP, currently full time. Have my eye on management post 2 Bands higher but that probably won't come up for 5 years or so. Part time (0.5wte) post has came up 1 band higher than current role, and is management based.

Which post would be best for career progression? Sticking with the lower band as it is full time, or getting the experience at a higher band albeit on a part time basis.

Tia

It is unlikely you will be able to jump 2 bands, so you would be better going for the 0.5 at the next grade up (presuming you can afford the drop in pay). Can you do both? Go for the promotion and if you get it retain 0.5 in your current post?

They like experience at each band so it is unlikely that you will be able to jump 2 bands. I would go for the part time post and ask if you can keep 0.5 at your current post.

In 10 years in the NHS I never knew anyone who jumped two bands (although that doesn't mean it's not possible) so id go for the one at the next band up. That way you get some management experience and by the time another job has come up at the higher band (if I understand you correctly you say this might not be for a few years) you'll have a much, much stronger chance. If you're worrying that going part time will leave you out of pocket you could always join NSH Professionals and pick up some bank shifts to boost your income.

Sorry I'm only coming back to this I really appreciate your replies Flowers

Good to know re the jumping the bands. Im currently on maternity leave and had originally intended on going back on around a 30 hour week so wouldn't be keen on 2x0.5 posts. We could afford the drop for a few years, it would mainly be my pension that I would be concerned about, but maybe I could look into a private one alongside.

Just to wait for it to be advertised now! Thanks again!

I am going to disagree - I have known plenty that have gone from Band 4-6 and 5-7 especially when there is a reorganisation taking place...

What's the worst that can happen if you apply for the higher banded role??
