I am off sick from my job with depression and anxiety. I am currently being paid SSP only.
I want to hand in my notice and look for something else, partly because my job has been one of the contributing factors in my illness, and partly because I need a complete change of direction.
If I were to hand in my notice, which I would presume would be a month as that is my pay cycle, when could I be available to start work? Would I only be available from a month after my notice date, as I would still technically be employed until then?
Sorry to sound so daft, but I've not resigned from a job in a very long time, I've been with my current employer for almost 3 years, and before that I was made redundant after a 10 year post.
Would be grateful for any advice, I want to do the 'right' thing, but also need to be paid what I am owed.

You need to find out your notice period. I was paid monthly, but needed to be prepared for 3 months notice. I got away with working just over 2 months, 2 weeks holiday and released 2 weeks early.
But yes, technically, you aren't available til the end of your notice period. You can possibly negotiate a shorter period, to be available earlier, but that means less pay owed. Don't forget you will get holiday pay to.

Who can I ask about my notice period? It's a small company, and I don't really want them getting wind of it until I do it, iykwim!
