I've just found out I'm pregnant, I've been working in a care home for 7 months, my probationary period was supposed to finish last month but I've heard nothing about it yet. I'm really worried about telling my manager as she is giving another pregnant staff member a hard time at the moment. I'm scared she will try to find a way to sack me, even though all the feedback I've gotten since I started has been great, written and verbal. I'm just wondering where I stand as she can be quite intimidating, and I want to know all my rights before I tell her. Thankyou

You don't have to tell your employer till you have 15 weeks left which is the minimum. So if you don't want to say then don't :)

If your employer sacks you you can probably take them to the cleaners. Particularly as you've had good feedback so far. You have a lot of protection when you are pregnant, it doesn't mean you can't be sacked but the risk to the employer is quite large, so most employers would think very carefully before taking this kind of action.

I told no one outside of the family until I was 5 or 6 months pregnant as it did not show and worked full time until I went into labour! I really think there are lots of advantages in just keep quiet about it until the last possible moment. They cannot sack you or treat you badly because of pregnancy if they don't know you are pregnant. I also recommend very short maternity leaves as they work well for a lot of us.

In law yes it is likely to be deemed unfair if you are sacked in pregnancy but it does depend. If others are made redundant at the same time and the reason for the whole batch of people is not pregnancy then it could still be a fair dismissal.
