Working part-time and taking on other work in spare time. Advice needed!

I've asked my employer to reduce my hours as I was struggling to cope due to family related issues. Thankfully they agreed to this, even though it will be a pain for someone else to pick up the work I can't do. They have been very supportive all round, so I am very grateful.
Dropping my hours means we will be quite skint unfortunately and I have the chance to earn some extra cash by doing work in my spare time at home (will only be working 2.5 days for my main job). Do I have to tell my main employer about this? I'm a bit worried they'll think I was just making excuses to drop my hours if I can fit in extra work at home.

If I were you, I would.

Did you request home working as part of your flexible working request to your main employer?

As an employer I'd be a little narked if someone asked for part -time (but not home working) and then found part-time home working elsewhere, as I'd prefer to retain someone's skills full time (with some of that time working at home) than for them to go part-time, and cause me the hassle of backfilling their hours (if the work is home-workable that is!).

no I don't work from home for main employer and didn't request that, as it wouldn't be feasible.My job is based almost solely in the workplace with some preparation time, which I will do when I'm in in the office on the days when I am working. My working at home would not affect my main job at all as it would be on different days.

Well you'll have to tell your second employer about your main job won't you?

You used to have to nominate which was your main job to the Tax Office so that they could get your tax and NI deducted correctly. I'm not sure if it still works like that but if you are already being taxed then you might have to pay full tax on your earnings from the second job.

Check your contact. It'll more than likley have a "no working anywhere else unless we agree" clause.

I'd agree to check your contract, but it may well not have a 'no working anywhere else' contract. I've always done occasional extra work alongside my main job, and have never found it an issue. With most of the extra jobs I've done, I've not told my employer about them, mainly because I don't see it as being of interest / relevance / concern to them.
