Wakefield Grammar / Mulberry House / QEGS - Any views?

I would be grateful for any personal views or experience of Wakefield Grammar School.
I am considering this school for my son (PFB!) from Mulberry House nursery through to sixth form. It's obviously a significant financial commitment and whilst we are happy to make that commitment, I want to make sure we know as much as we can about parent's and children's experiences of the school.
Whilst academic attainment is of high priority, the pastoral care, culture and atmosphere is of equal importance.
We live south of Wakefield in an area not blessed with great state schools.
Has your son been happy at this school?
Is the pastoral care any good?
Anything else we should know?
Thanks for your help Smile

Hi there,
I know a lot of boys who go to QEGS, so the senior part of the school and all parents speak very highly of it. Unfortunately I don't know many who send them to the junior/Mulberry House, but I know it's all been rebuilt and looks fantastic, with lots of boy-centric activities.

The only thing that would make me think slightly would be the lack of girls all the way through..but if you have opportunities for your boy to mix with girls socially then not too much of an issue.

I am sure someone else will come along with more comments. I know many parents in our village used to send them all the way through but since the recession they are saving their pennies until secondary!

My DH went there and got all As, went to Oxbridge, etc. We revisited it again very recently.

Does the above mean it's a good school? Not necessarily. Would we send a boy there? Actually, no.

If I were you, I'd pootle down to Mount Saint Mary's in Sheffield and have a look at that. Less academic, but that doesn't mean a bright child won't thrive! That ought not to be a bad journey from south of Wakefield. Also, depending on how close you are to a train station, go and look at GSAL too.

Qegs is a good school. But look around!

Sorry nothing current to add but I went to Wakefield Girls' High School 20 yrs ago and I reeeeeally wouldn't worry about the QEGS boys not getting used to girls - loads of joint activities (a-hem)Smile
On a more serious note everyone I knew has gone on to be very successful.
