I saw it on yahoo news yesterday (and then immediately searched a whisky collecting pot containing 100's of the things ... but typically none undated )

The report said to contact the royal mint if you wanted to cash one in. They would give £50 for it. But it did also suggest they might become more valuable as the years went on. There are thousands of them in circulation apparantly, so I guess valuable but not that valuable.

It's not the actual mint that is giving £50 for them apparently, it is a private company called The London Mint Office.

I know this is going to seem like sour grapes because I don't have one (harumpf ) but the whole thing seems a bit dodgy.

Why is the London Mint Office website a .org web address- I thought they were only for government websites, and this is a private company.

And why are they only offering to buy 10,000 of the coins? wouldn't they be better buying as many as poss then melting down loads of them, making the ones they keep even more valuable to collectors?

anyone can be an org, I know a few charities that are orgs.
Government sites have gov in it like www.hmrc.gov.uk for HM Revenue and Customs.
I agree though I think the London Mint Office are trying to sound very official.
The most valuable ones seem to have no date on either side. There seems to be a large number with no date on one side or another and the genuine ones with no date are fetching way more than £50. The London Mint will be fully aware of their value and just hope that the £50 for 20p attracts some people. No idea why they say they are limiting it to 10, 000 - to make people feel special?
