How do I pay?

OK I think I've got it wrong somehow, I'm trying to buy something, I have opened a paypal account, linked it to my bank account, then I went to my messages on e bay and clicked on pay now and followed the instructions. The seller (who is a bit pissed off with me I think) has just replied to say I have paid with an e-cheque, pointed out the egg timer to me which says it's going to take nearly 2 weeks to clear!!!!! How did I manage to pay with an e cheque? Did I pay with an e cheque? How long is it going to take for him to get the money? (cash was put into bank account nearly 2 weeks ago) so the money is there. How do I pay in the immediate way? Any help gratefully received (And for the next time what are the problems with cash on collection apart from insurance at least you get to see it and get it and sellers get their money?)

as far as I know - the only way a paypal payment is instant is when you use funds from the paypal account. If paypal is using funds from an attached account then it will be an echeque and will take 10 to 14 days.
I've only ever received them this way, never sent them, but a seller will get notice of estimated cleared date and will then get a message from paypal when it has cleared.

Ahh thanks guys I had a nice message from them this morning they are new to e bay too and I think they understand and realise I'm not trying to pull a fast one!! goblin how do I register a debt card? Does that take s week as well? I do think paypal lacks clarity about thow long it will take, clearly that is one of the ways they make their money. If I register a debit card and repay them will they get that instantly and then be able to pay me back my payment when it arrives without either of us paying charges? I know the other way is credit card and have offered that but they have never taken me up so I'm guessing they want to avoid charges (as do I)

From PayPal 'Help'....

Can I use my UK bank account to make Instant Bank Transfer and eCheque payments?

Yes. UK members who register a UK bank account denominated in Pounds Sterling can complete bank funding on their UK bank accounts and make Instant Bank Transfer and eCheque payments. Once you have completed bank funding, simply select Instant Bank Transfer or eCheque as your payment method when you send money.

Here's how:

  1. Log in to your PayPal account
  2. Click the Send Money tab
  3. Enter the required information.
  4. Click Continue
  5. Click the Change link under the Payment Method heading.
  6. Select the Instant Bank Transfer radio button
  7. Click Continue
  8. Review the information on the Confirmation page and click Send Money to complete your transaction

Why don't I see the Instant Bank Transfer option when I send money?

For security and verification purposes, PayPal uses statistical models to identify unusual patterns of behavior when approving individual transactions - similar to how banks and credit card companies identify questionable account activities.

When a transaction is refused, it may be a result of unsafe activity detected in your account or a processing failure. You can still complete the transaction by using a backup funding option in your PayPal account.

If you are a PayPal member from Australia or the European Union, you cannot pay by Instant Bank Transfer from a US bank account.
