Why are people listing things where you pay to collect?

Got caught out the other day

Was browsing eBay today and noticed a lot of people are listing with postage as

Collection in person
£xx.xx

The amount varies per listing

Is this allowed?

it is allowed to charge a collection fee but it must be stated clearly in listing, probably for possible inconvenience of staying in, however i would expect someone charging collection fee to be very flexible re collection time,

you can not charge the postage cost to someone collecting it must be separate and reasonable sometimes collection items like a vase /mirror would still need to be wrapped in bubble wrap so there would be a cost

But surely this is going to put people off bidding? why would I pay extra to pick something up in person using my own transport?

If there's two items in my area, one with a collection charge and one without I know which one I'm going for.

I wonder if Ebay applies FVF to the collection fee, anyone know?

I hope so. I have seen collection fees in the past where items are sold by a business that keeps them in a wharehouse/garage/spare room and they don't want local pick up people. So the charge is there because if they have to take time out to meet the buyer, they are not making money for their business iyswim.

I was just browsing some jackets (I buy all my clothes for work from ebay, nice and smart but cheap and no trawling round the shops) for the first time since last year and was at the postage some are charging. The rates have not gone up THAT Much that its £6 to post a size 14 lightweight jacket 2nd class!

Ebay, oh ebay I am sooo going off you. I am getting better stuff by calling in the charity shops whenever I am in two quite affluent towns not far from me. Got a hobbs wool and cashmere coat last week for a tenner in the hospice shop

i accidently bid on something last night that had a collection fee that i didn't notice so i emailed the seller to say i wanted to cancel. She had said she wasn't sure what had happened but some of her items were showing a cost next to where it says collect in person and she wasn't sure how it had happened but there was no collection fee.
