Dementia and Alzheimer's

Dad had COVID now bed bound

78 year old Dad with dementia been in a Care Home since 2018.

Was starting to lose the ability to walk but still able to sit in a chair, transfer, sit in wheelchair.

Had a swab mid Jan. Had the vaccine 2 days later, tested positive for COVID day later. His stats were all over the place for a couple of days but since then they are good.

Long story short. He's bed bound now for 5 weeks. Now in a hospital bed with pressure mattress. Can't move himself, turn in bed, toilet himself (although he was doubly incontinent before), can't feed or drink himself, is asleep most of the time with little communication. The odd spark of humour but not much more.

They told us it's unlikely he'll ever walk again. Having seen him through Skype I can't imagine him ever getting out of bed.

It's so sad to see him like this - have actually only been able to see him twice in a year. He has no quality of life, would hate to be like this if he knew.

I don't know if I'm asking anything or just writing my thoughts. He could be like this for a long time - that's the bit I'm struggling with. For him. No quality of life and being like that for a long time. He'd hate it. It seems cruel.

There's nothing anyone can do or say really.

Hi I am sorry to hear of your father's deterioration. That must be hard seeing him like that. Hopefully he will improve a little as time goes on, I guess there is little information yet around Covid and whether the elderly and infirm can recover.

My DM is in hospital with delirium and tested positive for Covid 5 days after her vaccination. She got off lightly and the confusion is her only symptom. However, I was allowed to visit today and was visibly shocked at how frail she has become. She can just about shuffle around, can't drink out of a regular cup or glass anymore and was incredibly confused (more so than normal although she does have Alzheiner's). It was sad to see and I am not sure she will ever be able to live at home again. She is going into a CH tomorrow for up to 6 weeks interim care. I just hope she improves there or I will be looking for a permanent home for her.

I do understand what you are going through and wish your father well and hope you see some improvement over time.
