My 24 year old son has had an indecent chat with a 9 year old

Hi all, just after some advice, my middle son age 24, has been reported to his employment agency (they tracked him down to who he worked for via twitter and his shared posts!)for indecent chats with a child. The parents of said child have screenshotted the conversation and contacted the agency to say he is a danger to children, he has lost his job (understandable) they have also reported to the police, who didn't actually contact us, I took my son into the police station to find out what it was about, they said it was Snapchat messages , and there were two other accounts messaging this girl at the same time asking for pictures etc, my son originally denied any knowledge of it but now admits he was messaging her, he denies knowing the two other people messaging. As it stands he has not been formally interviewed cautioned etc . We have been told there are 3 explicit images but there is no evidence on them as to which of the three men sent them. What is his likely charge, if he's just had a sexually inappropriate conversation with a minor? And if they can identify who sent which image and he is responsible for any of them, what then? He is living with me and three younger siblings and as much as what he's done makes me physically sick, I don't think he is a predatory paedophile.
