Word template for Radio script

Can anyone advise me on how to make a template in Word that allows me to put the character's name on the left of the page and their spoken words in the middle.

I have read up on putting in tabs and can put them in but how can you move from eg end of one piece of dialogue (which is in the middle of the page) to the left side for next character's name without redoing all your tab positions.

In old versions of Word I think I just clicked on a drop down styles menu, and selected the style, don't know how to do it now in Office 2013.

I am not bothered about all the other formatting, SCENE etc. Just trying to get the dialogue down.

There are online pdf downloads of scripts, but I can't see how to convert them for use without paying Adobe for converting to Word.

There are dozens of guides online but I just don't get it and am wasting hours on this boohoo.

i'm not a big fan of the new version of word. I think it's really hard to find everything. Sounds like you either need to have columns for your text, or maybe using a table would work? I know you can make the lines on a table invisible, and can resize the columns.

Do a search for "word template script" and you should get a useable Word template you can download.

Many thanks, found one under that search. I'd been looking for 'radio script'. It's not exactly right as the character and dialogue are not on the same line (and I can't see how to change it to that) but apart from that it's ok.
It is by Keith Loh.

Apparently spacing using spacebar or a table (which I do know how to use) is not allowed!

Just a second, Moniker, before you start writing!

I downloaded some software from the BBC - let me find it for you.

Hmm I think it was called Script Smart and there's something on the site now about not using it as it can't be easily edited.

Here's a screenshot. In case you can't see it, click on the little Paragraph icon on the Home toolbar. Change the Hanging Indents so that it's 7cm or whatever you want. Click OK.

Then, when you type, it will let you type at the top left for the character's name, then you should press Tab. Until you press Enter, all text will wrap around that tab point.

You could download a program called Celtex - it's completely free and really simple. Just click the script option and it lays everything out for you.
